Pokfulam Village

It was a great day out sketching at Pokfulam Village, the last remaining village on Hong Kong Island. In order to better capture the character of this place, I made a collage of three sketches, the view of the village, the entrance and an alley.

Pre-War Tenement Building in Wellington Street

This building is one of the very few remaining pre-war tenement buildings in Hong Kong. Built in 1879 after the great fire in Central, the ground floor originally housed a jewellery shop. The shop was replaced by a dried seafood shop in 1930 until the whole building was closed down in 2007.

Mural on Sai Kung Cows

I spent a few hours working on this simple mural this afternoon in the heart of Sai Kung Town.  I hope this little mural can help the public to pay more attention to the feral cows, our dear neighbours in Sai Kung.

Old Barber Shop in San Po Kong

Possibly the oldest shop in San Po Kong. I walked past it every day as a kid when I lived in this area. Now it is the only shop that remains the same in the whole street.

Partial Fisheye Perspective: See Cheung Street, Sai Kung Old Town

A typical Sunday scene in Sai Kung Old Town, relaxing and joyful!  In order to capture more of the street scene and to include more people to the scene, I used partial fisheye perspective to squeeze in a section of the street which would otherwise be outside of the picture frame.  I'll upload a video of the sketch process later to illustrate a bit more.

Sketching Military Vehicles at Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence

The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence is a place worth sketching again and again!  A former fort used during the Battle of Hong Kong in the Second World War by the British Army against the invading Japanese, it now houses military cars, weapons and original military structures.

Kowloon City Hau Wong Temple

The temple was built more than 200 years ago. It was thought that the temple was dedicated to a war general named Yeung Leung Jit but no one is sure nowadays. There are a lot of historic relics inside the temple. After sketching the entrance corridor, I included the spearheads of eight of the sixteen beautifully-crafted spears placed on both sides of the temple corridor. They might be symbols depicting the Eight Immortals often times depicted in Classical Chinese literature but I'm not completely sure.

Sketching Maryknoll House in Stanley

Eslite Spectrum Tsim Sha Tsui Store

A fun sketch session with a group of happy urban sketchers inside the cozy Eslite Spectrum Tsim Sha Tsui Store. I chose this particular spot where I could sketch the rows of bookshelves on the left , the people reading right in front of me and the Victoria Harbour outside the window.

This is one of the feral cows in the Sai Kung area.  The cows used to be working cows once but as most farmers gave up farming in Hong Kong, these cows became free animals, roaming the hills and lowlands in the Sai Kung District.

Sketching Mid-Autumn Lanterns

Mid Autumn Festival is coming. Time to sketch all these beautiful traditional and modern lanterns for sale. Many Hongkongers would buy lanterns for their kids to play with. However shops selling handmade lanterns are becoming increasingly rare. How nice it would be if more people can make a living by selling handmade items.

Queen's Road West, Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong

Colourful Hong Kong Exhibition [

It's my pleasure to be one of the twelve artists to be featured in this series of exhibitions organised by Art For Life Studio and Black Sugar Coffee. I cordially invite you to come to see my latest studio paintings and live urban sketches which depict the many sides of Hong Kong, our homeland.

Gary Yeung : Colourful Hong Kong

Ever evolving as an artist, Gary was strongly influenced by his training, which tends to make his paintings impressionistic in style. As for content, his paintings exemplify the mystic charm of Hong Kong’s past, present and future. Drawn with vivid and intricate details, they feature objects and people that Gary finds relevant, if not profound. These works often represent the demure yet visceral feelings he possesses as a proud local born.

Gary Yeung [

exhibition | 1 - 31 September 2016
venue | Black Sugar Coffee, 8 Peace Avenue, Ho Man Tin
opening hours | Mon - Fri 8:00-18:00
Sat & Sun - 10:00-18:00

I attended veteran sketcher, Paul Heaston's workshop in the Manchester Urban Sketchers Symposium.  It's about fish-eye-view sketching which means capturing and putting as much as I can see from the street on the limited space on the paper.  A great exercise and great tips from Paul Heaston!

England Travel Sketch : The John Rylands Library, Manchester The John Rylands Library

The library was built in 1900 by Enriqueta Rylands for her husband and later as a gift to the people of Manchester.  In the sketch, I drew the staircase which shows the gothic style of architecture.  I sketched the early printing machine on display as well and finally, I sketched the statue of Enriqueta Rylands.

England Travel Sketch : Sugar Junction

On the first day in Manchester, a group of Hong Kong sketchers couldn't wait to try out the delicious desserts at Sugar Junction in the Northern Quarters of Manchester. As urban sketchers, it's almost a responsibility to sketch the food and the tea before the food and the tea were allowed to be consumed.

England Sketch Tour 2016

I really enjoyed the Manchester symposium and the subsequent travel to a few English cities and villages and here I composed a little video with footages of different places I visited as well as some of my sketches I did on location. (in Cantonese)

Unlike many museums which house their exhibits indoors, St Fagans is an open air museum which occupies a large plot of land in the countryside at the outskirts of Cardiff.   I spent an afternoon strolling through the old village houses, shops and town facilities which showed how life was in the past.  I decided to sketch three separate scenes I found interesting.  From the right is an old  farmhouse where livestocks and people once shared the same roof, middle, a building which housed two shops and left, farmland where sheep roamed freely.

England Travel Sketch : Cardiff Castle

The castle had been rebuilt and expanded several times since the 11th century.  The location obviously was of great military importance.   It was rainy so I stayed in a balcony of one of the castle walls to sketch the castle.  I used markers instead of watercolour so that I could work faster in the damp weather.

Sketching Hong Kong Skyline in Eslite Bookshop

I went back to sketch the city skyline once more but this time in the comfort of the air-conditioned Eslite Bookshop in Star House.  The moving summer clouds against the intense skyline was a great sight to sketch.  Things changed so much throughout the decades!  The only thing in the sketch that remains the same for decades is the Star Ferry, which has been serving Hong Kong for more than a hundred years.

Oil Painting of Old Hong Kong

Working on a painting about old Hong Kong.  It’s one of the works for my upcoming exhibition in September.  More info in August.  Stay tuned.

The Clock Tower, The Freedom Fighter and the Hong Kong Skyline

I sat down under the shades of a row of trees on this fine hot day and sketched the spectacular view in front of me. On the right,  I sketched the remaining old clock tower of the long-gone Kowloon Canton Railway Terminal.  In front of the tower is the sculpture of the Freedom Fighter by the French sculptor César Baldaccini, donated by the Foundation of Cartier to the Hong Kong Urban Council in 1991.  To avoid political controversy,  the council decided to rename it as the Flying Frenchman which I think was a wrong decision.   And across Victoria Harbour, the skyline of Hong Kong Island.

Bishop's House, Hong Kong Fringe Club and Foreign Correspondents' Club Second Sketch

I came back with a group of sketchers to sketch the same scene again.  Instead of stationing in the street, we hid in the lobby of a hotel which offered great view of the Bishop House, Hong Kong Fringe Club and Foreign Correspondents' Club.

Sketching a Delonix Tree in Sai Kung

My first sketch of a Delonix regia! It's not bright red all over but the partially red canopy makes it really interesting to sketch and it's standing in a very scenic location in a quiet seafront village in Sai Kung. While sketching, an old lady showed up and told me these two Delonix trees were planted by her husband thirty years ago. So nice! I wish I could plant a tree nearby and watch it grow up too!

Bishop's House, Hong Kong Fringe Club and Foreign Correspondents' Club

Two historic buildings in Lower Albert Road, Central.   On the left on the terrace is the Bishop's House, the residence and office of the Anglican Archbishop of Hong Kong.  It was completed in 1848.  On the right is the Old Dairy Farm Building which was built in 1892 and further expanded 1913, 1917 and 1925.  Currently the buidling houses the Hong Kong Fringe Club (South Block) and the Foreign Correspondents' Club (North Block).

State Theatre in North Point

State Theatre was built in 1957. A building that was built in Soviet style with an iconic "flying buttress" structure. The front facade features a western bas relief which depicts a dancing woman who was one of the four most beautiful women in ancient China. Such unique combination of elements within one building! The theatre should be granted "declared monument" status!

North Point
Hong Kong

Tsing Yi Tin Hau Festival 2016

My friends and I spent an afternoon sketching the festive scene of this year's Tin Hau birthday celebration on Tsing Yi Island!  Tin Hau is a very popular sea goddess in Hong Kong, worshipped by many people in every district.  The Cantonese opera street theatre on Tsing Yi Island is especially huge and the street food market is just fantastic!   After sketching, we ate our way through the street food market where many street snacks are becoming increasing difficult to find in regular shopping malls.
