Hoi An Cafe

I arrived at Hoi An Cafe quite late and only managed to finish the sketch without putting any colour on it. I went home and coloured it before I forgot how it looked like and here's the result. Hoi An Cafe is one of the few remaining old Hong Kong style cafes which still retains its original decoration inside. Not spectacular but deifinitely nostalgic.

Sheung Wan Graffiti Artists

Graffiti Artist in Sheung Wan

I went sketching with Urban Sketchers Hong Kong in Sheung Wan this afternoon.  Stuffy with occasional rain but the weather didn't affect our high spirit at all.  I walked around the neighbourhood of Sai Street and met a group of graffiti artists at work in a narrow alley.  Great sketch material so I settled down and did two quick sketches of them.  Rookie, a graffiti artist from Taiwan posed with my sketch of him.   Great work of art they were making!

Rookie!

Thanks Rookie!

Painting Old Hong Kong

Painting Old Hong Kong

It's a quite a challenge to paint so many people scattered on the stairs.  Based on an old photo, the scene is probably Ladder Street, Sheung Wan.   Currently, I'm building the under layer of the painting.

Sketching on Ladder Street

Ladder Street

I visited Ladder Street once more with a sketcher friend today.  This charming old tenement building here is vacant and no one knows what would be it's fate. To be refurbished or to be demolished just like so many others in Hong Kong?

At the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences

Sketching the Sketchers at the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences

Despite the cold weather, a group of 20 sketchers got together to sketch the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences today.  The building was of Edwardian style and was built in 1906 as a Pathological institute.  The building was declared monument in 1990 and in 1995 it was converted into the current Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences.  As I was late today, I saw my fellow sketchers already working when I arrived and I decided to include them in my sketch.

Old YMCA Headquarters, Hong Kong

Old YMCA Headquarters, Hong Kong

A merry group of sketchers assembled in front of the old YMCA building in Bridges Street this afternoon and sketched whatever they found pleasing.   I chose to sketch this handsome building which was built in 1918, the oldest of any YMCA premises in Hong Kong.

Wall Tree at Pound Lane

Wall Tree at Pound Lane

This wall tree (Ficus microcarpa) thrives on this old masonry wall in Pound Lane.  However, its future is uncertain as the government is proposing to build the second escalator along Pound Lane linking Queen's Road and the Midlevels.

A Sixty-Year-Old Hong Kong Style Cafe
An afternoon well spent! The cafe has been serving Sheung Wan for sixty years! The old wooden furniture, the high ceiling and the local delicacies brought back a lot of memory! Thanks Hoi On Cafe!

Centre Street Old Tenement Building

Centre Street Old Tenement Building

Oil painting with texture paste, foam boards and acrylic!

Day 1: Building up structure and volume with model paste and foam materials.
Day 2:  The coloring process took a whole day to finish.

Centre Street Tenement Building is an icon at the junction of Centre Street and Des Voeux Road. On the ground level there is also an old-fashioned wine seller, a gem in this part of the city.

Painting in Progress: Sheung Wan Tenement Building

I spent a whole afternoon working on the modeling paste and foam materials that gave the painting a more three-dimensional feel.  Now I am waiting for the paste to get dry before I can start working with the colors.

Urban Sketchers: 30th World Sketchwalk, Hong Kong

Today was our very 1st successful urbansketchers' sketchwalk here in HK and we were also glad to be sketching with everyone around the world on this World sketch day. We had 7 very excited sketchers gathering at the HK university east gate. We ploughed through a very old estate, looking at some very early walkup apartments and back alley. I was told the streets (Water street, eastern street, western street...) here are also one of the earliest roads to be named. Weather was cloudy and rather chilly but we had a good time sketching and getting to know each other.

Sketches from Hong Kong for 30th World Wide SketchCrawl

Thanks Paul for initiating the activity.  All together, seven urban sketchers went out to sketch at Sai Ying Pun, an area populated with old Hong Kong buildings on a very steep slope.

Many bikes are put on protective coats, seems like they are wearing raincoats.

We gathered on this very narrow and steep Western Street, air was foul as large trucks stopped next to us from time to time but still we had a good time sketching.  A sketchbook, a pen and good company are enough to transform anything around into good sketching materials:)

Possibly one of the oldest common residential building in Centre Street, it still bears the sign of a now closed laundry shop.

Christmas Meets Fantasy! From Hong Kong

This one isn't a real urban sketch or drawing, but the street scene is based on photos I took in the Sai Ying Poon area over the Hong Kong side.  I added the bank of China tower as backdrop as well.

Wish you all a Merry Christmas!
