Sketching in the Woods

The warm sun appeared briefly and hid back into the clouds!  I rested under a row of Sweet Gum. A very quiet afternoon in the woods.  Perfect time for quiet sketching and resting!

Hong Kong Park Aviary

The aviary has always been my favourite attraction inside Hong Kong Park!  The juxtaposition of the commercial high-rises around the park with the dense woodland and the flying tropical birds within is a magical sight to behold!

Sketching with Alex and Joyce in Dihua Street 與Alex和Joyce迪化街速寫

I met Alex and Joyce, two veteran urban sketchers and founders of Urban Sketchers Taiwan on the first day of my trip.  We sketched in Dihua street, an old street where much original architecture is preserved!  It was a great day out!  Thanks Alex and Joyce!

Taipei Guandu Nature Park

A rainy day in Taipei!   I visited Guandu Nature Park in Taipei, a nature reserve which is haven to many migratory birds.  I sat down inside the park lobby and started sketching the view and the kids who were also sketching at the time.

Ice-Cream Man Restaurant

Ice-Cream Man Restaurant "雪糕佬冰室" has been in Sai Kung Old Town for a long time.  I was told about the delicious milk tea it serves and decided to give it a try.  Settling down with my milk tea and noodles, I couldn't resist to start sketching the interior of the restaurant which was not attractive but very local.

Ligustrum Sinense in Blossom

Ligustrum sinense is a common native plant in Hong Kong.  The flowering period starts from February and ends in June.  Flowers are very tiny, white and formed in clusters.  They have a strong fragrance too.  This plant here adorns the alley that leads up to a secret quiet park in the heart of Sai Kung Town.

Festive Flowers at Mong Kok Flower Market

I returned to the flower market the second time to do a close-up sketch of the Chinese New Year festive flowers.  It was a supper sunny day with strong lights and shadows, a perfect moment to sketch flowers!

Hong Kong Museum of History: Boat of Early Boat Dwellers

As the temperature plummeted in Hong Kong to below 7 degrees Celsius, members of Urban Sketchers Hong Kong decided to find an indoor venue to sketch today!

In the warm indoors of Hong Kong Museum of History, I did three quick sketches.  Here's the first one, a real boat placed in the first hall of the "Hong Kong Story" section, together with a clay pot for preparing herbal medicine and a line of salted fish.

Stone Houses Cafe, Kowloon City

A quick sketch together with a few fellow sketchers at Stone Houses Cafe, located in a historic building in Kowloon City.  More information about this place: http://www.stonehouses.org

Sham Shui Po Fabric Market (Yen Chow Street)

Sham Shui Po Fabric Market is such a place in Hong Kong where customers can browse through very different fabrics for different purposes all in one place.   It's also a tourist attraction in its own right.  A place for tourists who are really interested in local Hong Kong. Tearing it down for a few blocks of residential high-rises is an act of stupidity!

Nga Chin Wai Village

Nga Chin Wai Village is the only surviving walled village in the urban area of Hong Kong.  According to legend it was established in 1278 by a group of people who followed the Song Emperor who fled to Hong Kong from the Mongols.  The Chinese characters, read from right to left, "慶有餘" (Hing Yau Yu) engraved on the granite stone above the entrance are said to be the handwriting of the Song Emperor.

This historic village will soon be closed for redevelopment and the remaining villagers are forced to leave the village.
