Hong Kong Bird Series : Japanese White-eye on a Coral Tree 香港鳥類:暗綠繡眼鳥與盛放中的刺桐

Three Japanese white-eye hopping on a Coral tree! Acrylic on gesso paper. These little birds are common resident birds in Hong Kong. Thanks to veteran wildlife photographer Robert at Wildcreatures Hong Kong for taking me to Tai Po Kau nature Reserve, I took a series of photos of these beautiful birds when they were hopping on the Coral trees which were in full blossom. I had been thinking painting these birds since then and now I finally composed and painted this piece. To simulate the vibrant colours of both the birds and flowers, I repeatedly glazed the painting with layers of transparent colours, a technique which is called Flemish technique and has been used by many old and contemporary masters on their oil paintings.

Hong Kong Pharmacy Cat 香港藥材舖貓

Doodle time! Hong Kong Pharmacy Cat. It’s quite a common sight to see a cat or two guarding a traditional Hong Kong pharmacy which sells both oriental and western medicine and daily necessities. Besides inking and colouring the cat, it’s fun to look for references of some of the most popular and yet unusual medicated ointments and oil available in the market.

Black Kite Over Hong Kong 香港麻鷹

Newly completed ink drawing. ‘Black Kite over Hong Kong’ I’m very happy that it has just found a new home! Black Kites are common birds of prey in Hong Kong and they can be seen flying above and between skyscrapers. I think it would be great to draw a majestic black kite with the iconic view of Victoria Harbour from the Peak to go with it. #inkartist #lineart #birdart #wildlifeart #blackkite #hongkongbirds #香港雀鳥 #麻鷹

Second Summer Hong Kong Art Sale

I am glad that some of my artworks have been collected recently and found their way to their new homes.  And now comes the second Summer Hong Kong Art Sale. All together seven pieces for you to choose from. Five of them are my latest Hong Kong native bird artworks and the other two are framed artworks in landscape orientation which depict old hong kong boats and feral cows in Sai Kung.  If you are interested in collecting these art pieces, do contact me via instagram :
or
facebook:

Black Kite Close-up 41cm x 29cm
Mounted size 50cm x 40cm
Acrylic ink on paper.  A great thank you to Robert @ https://www.wildcreatureshongkong.org for providing me with his wonderful photo reference to this handsome Black Kite. Instead of rendering it in the usual way, I added patterns to the feather formation to make it more stylised.

Oriental Magpie Robin 41cm x 29cm
Mounted size 50cm x 40cm
Acrylic ink on paper.  It's based on a photo I took near Sai Kung Lions Nature Education Centre.  An Oriental Magpie Robin happened to be singing high above me.  To render it, I added the stylised clouds and sky rendering in the classical Franklin Booth style.

Japanese Sparrowhawk 41cm x 29cm
Mounted size 50cm x 40cm
Acrylic ink on paper.  An unexpected encounter of this hawk feasting on a robin near my home in Sai Kung.  I quickly went home to grab my tele lens and I was lucky to have taken many photos of this bird feasting.  Thus this piece of artwork. Thank you!  Japanese Sparrowhawk!

Black Kite above Central 38cm x 26cm (SOLD)
Acrylic ink on paper.  The background is based in an on-location sketch I did a few years ago at the roof top of a building in Central.  Black Kites like to circle high above and between high rises in Hong Kong so I created this ink painting.

Osprey 23cm x 35cm
Mounted size 40cm x 50cm.
Acrylic ink on paper.  Osprey!  A handsome predator not as easily to be spotted as the Black Kite!

Old Aberdeen Boats
Framed size 42.5cm x 74.5cm
Watercolour and Mixed Media on paper  It's based on a low-res vintage photo I found on the net.  I really wanted to visualise how the scene was like so I added a lot of details in the illustration style and used watercolour to create a relaxing mood to this piece.

Sai Kung Cows
Framed size 36cm x 78cm
Watercolour and Mixed Media on paper  Feral cows are members of the Sai Kung community. They can be spotted walking, eating and resting in town quite easily on weekdays.  This piece depicts a scene which is a combination of certain references of the lovely and gentle Sai Kung cows.

Sketching in the Water in Sai Kung 西貢溪中速寫

Sitting and sketching in the middle of this stream. The water and the shades helped me cool down while sketching on this otherwise very hot day.

Hong Kong Bird Series: Blue Whistling Thrush 香港雀鳥:紫嘯鶇

Hong Kong Bird Series: Blue Whistling Thrush 香港雀鳥:紫嘯鶇

Mixed media on paper Based on a photo I took from under a banyan tree, I reimagined the scene by putting the bird high up between the branches of a banyan tree. Since the bird is brght blue/violet blue in colour, I decided to use complementary colours, orange and yellow to contrast with the bird.

Hong Kong Bird Series: Japanese sparrowhawk 香港雀鳥:日本松雀鷹

Finally get this done. The drawing is based on a photo I took. When I was on my way home, I discovered a Japanese sparrowhawk settled up in a ficus tree, ready to feast on its prey, likely a Oriental magpie-robin. I quickly went home and grabbed my camera and returned to the scene. I was lucky, I took a great number of photos of this bird feasting. For the drawing, I decided to create a dramatic atmosphere by using lines in the sky which all point to the sparrowhawk. I also want the dark sky to contrast with the white wing and to highlight the feather pattern underneath the wing.

Hong Kong Bird Series : Oriental magpie-robin 香港雀鳥:鵲鴝

A drawing of a very common bird in Hong Kong. The Oriental magpie-robin (鵲鴝). I did this acrylic ink drawing based on a photo I took. The photo depicts this buddy resting high up on a bare branch against the clear sky. The photo itself isn't of great quality but I think it is a good reference material for a studio piece. I have always wanted to use pure lines to depict a summer sky with rolling clouds so here came the chance and I think they go well with the bare branches and the bird.

Sketching Home and Cats from a High Angle 高角度畫貓與家

I placed my stool on the windowsill of my living room so I had a high angle view to sketch. I have two cats but I ended up sketching six cats in different spots in my sketch (depending on how you count, there are actually more!) as they kept moving around as cats always do. It’s also sketching myself sketching and myself sketching in the lower half of my sketch. It’s like a tunnel going into the sketch.

Sketch Kit, Terrarium and Rainy Day 畫具、植物生態瓶與下雨天

I was thinking to either sketch my sketch kit or my terrarium in my home setting. Then I thought why not sketch them both with the view outside of the window so I laid out my sketch tools and got ready to sketch. I started with the outdoors with cool grey colour mix and worked my way back to the indoors with warm colours. Half way through, the gloomy overcast day turned into a rainy scene so I added the rain with crayon and white ink too. The rain turned out to be the most interesting thing that to observe and sketch. #usk #uskhk #urbansketchers #uskathome #rainsketch

Sea Cave at East Dam, High Island Reservoir, Hong Kong 香港萬宜水庫東壩海蝕洞

It’s a sketch I did at East Dam of High Island Reservoir on 7 March.  Since the opening of the Hong Kong Geo Park, simple facilities were added which allow visitors to see the geological features at closer range. I did three sketches in a row and spent the longest time on this one. The patterns, lines and colours were intriguing and fun to sketch.

Black Kite in Hong Kong 香港麻鷹

I like watching Black Kites circling above and between skyscrapers and I decided to depict that in this ink drawing. I would like to thank Robert from @wildcreatureshongkong for providing me with photo references of this beautiful bird which give me a better understanding of the feather patterns of the bird. For the background, I used a live sketch I did in Central as reference. First I blocked in the basic shapes of everything with a pencil. Then I started inking from the head of the Black Kite and slowly worked around the body of the bird. For the final process of adding the background, I used only light lines on the buildings so as to push them away from the Black Kite in the foreground which is inked with patches of solid black and thicker lines. And here is the final result, ‘Black Kite in Hong Kong’ Liquitex Professional Ink on Paper.

Sunny Day at Sai Kung Town Harbour 西貢市海灣風光

Sunny and warm, it’s the best time to sketch in Hong Kong! My sketcher friends and I met up in Sai Kung and walked to Tui Min Hoi just outside Sai Kung Town where we could sketch the harbour, the town and the mountain behind.

Hill Road Flyover 山道天橋

I have long wanted to sketch the winding narrow flyover along Hill Road near the University of Hong Kong. This iconic flyover passes through residential high rises along the road which makes excellent material to sketch!

St Francis of Assisi’s Catholic Church 石硤尾聖方濟各堂

A windy and cloudy afternoon gradually turned into a rainy evening! Still my sketcher friends and I were in happy mood as we sketched the Shek Kip Mei area. While some of my friends went to sketch the eateries in a nearby housing estate, another sketch friend and I went to sketch the iconic St Francis of Assisi’s Catholic Church and the street scene here in Shek Kip Mei.
