Chinese New Year Sai Kung Flower Market 西貢年宵市場

Visit my Etsy store: SimplyGary

It's an urban sketch I did in 2019 during Chinese New Year! Even though the flower market wasn't big when compared with the others such as the flower market at Victoria Park on Hong Kong Island, this flower market was a must visit during Chinese New Year in Sai Kung Town! Various festive flowers were put together for people to admire and to purchase! I seized this opportunity to sketch the many festive flowers! Such a happy experience!

Sai Kung Cow No. 2 西貢牛 No.2

Time to paint the cows in my neighbourhood. I just finished painting the second piece of the Sai Kung series. Sai Kung Cow No. 2. It’s the first time I used Daniel Smith watercolour and I like it.

西貢天后廟速寫 Sketching Sai Kung Tin Hau Temple

陰天安靜的下午,速寫好時機,我安坐西貢天后廟前速寫。

A cool overcast day, a quiet afternoon, perfect for some meditation and urban sketching in front of Sai Kung Tin Hau Temple, a temple for the goddess of the sea.

Sketching in the Water in Sai Kung 西貢溪中速寫

Sitting and sketching in the middle of this stream. The water and the shades helped me cool down while sketching on this otherwise very hot day.

Hot Day in Sai Kung 夏日西貢

Super hot day today in Sai Kung, Hong Kong! I took shelter under a building and sketched the tropical garden, the residential buildings and the rolling summer clouds in front of me. #usk #uskhk #urbansketchers #lineart

Sai Kung Tui Min Hoi Waterfront 西貢對面海海傍

A quiet afternoon at Sai Kung Tui Min Hoi Waterfront. Boats were docked here as usual in the shelter. The sky was grey and it seemed thunderstorm was looming. #usk #uskhk #urbansketchers #linesketch

Sketching Home and Cats from a High Angle 高角度畫貓與家

I placed my stool on the windowsill of my living room so I had a high angle view to sketch. I have two cats but I ended up sketching six cats in different spots in my sketch (depending on how you count, there are actually more!) as they kept moving around as cats always do. It’s also sketching myself sketching and myself sketching in the lower half of my sketch. It’s like a tunnel going into the sketch.

Sketch Kit, Terrarium and Rainy Day 畫具、植物生態瓶與下雨天

I was thinking to either sketch my sketch kit or my terrarium in my home setting. Then I thought why not sketch them both with the view outside of the window so I laid out my sketch tools and got ready to sketch. I started with the outdoors with cool grey colour mix and worked my way back to the indoors with warm colours. Half way through, the gloomy overcast day turned into a rainy scene so I added the rain with crayon and white ink too. The rain turned out to be the most interesting thing that to observe and sketch. #usk #uskhk #urbansketchers #uskathome #rainsketch

Sea Cave at East Dam, High Island Reservoir, Hong Kong 香港萬宜水庫東壩海蝕洞

It’s a sketch I did at East Dam of High Island Reservoir on 7 March.  Since the opening of the Hong Kong Geo Park, simple facilities were added which allow visitors to see the geological features at closer range. I did three sketches in a row and spent the longest time on this one. The patterns, lines and colours were intriguing and fun to sketch.

Sunny Day at Sai Kung Town Harbour 西貢市海灣風光

Sunny and warm, it’s the best time to sketch in Hong Kong! My sketcher friends and I met up in Sai Kung and walked to Tui Min Hoi just outside Sai Kung Town where we could sketch the harbour, the town and the mountain behind.

A Shop in Sai Kung Old Town 西貢舊墟店舖

I wandered into an narrow alley in Sai Kung old town and sketched this shop which sells rattan baskets and vases. The shop is run by Christian New Life Association which aims at helping drug addicts in Hong Kong.

Sai Kung Village House

On 14 April, a group of Hong Kong urban sketchers gathered in Sai Kung Town. It was a great day sketching outdoors except there was rain for a while in the afternoon.  A few of us walked to this village house in the outskirts of worn and spent roughly two hours sketching this house.

Sai Kung Tin Hau Temple During Lunar New Year 農曆新年西貢天后廟

People come to offer joss sticks and prayers at Sai Kung Tin Hau Temple on the third day of the Lunar New Year. Tin Hau is a sea goddess widely worshipped in Hong Kong and this temple is one of the many in the territory.

Sai Kung Lunar New Year Flower Market 2019 西貢花市2019

Wish you all a happy and prosperous year of the pig ahead!

A great afternoon spent at the Sai Kung Lunar New Year Flower Market.  Nice flowers, festive mood and enough space for me to get very close to the flowers.

Old Mansion in Sai Kung Old Town 西貢舊墟舊屋

Large historical mansion in Sai Kung Old Town. Marked by a private property no entry sign, it seems the mansion has been abandoned and is left to crumble. Anyone knows more about this place?
