Belle Vue Park, Newport, South Wales

 

I visited Belle Vue Park, a large Victorian public park in Newport which opened in 1894. One of the main features here is Belle Vue Park Tearoom! I walked around it and finally chose the spot under the shelter of the bandstand which allowed me to sketch the tea house under shade. I like how one of the ornamental pillars of the bandstand frames the tea house!

St Fagans National Museum of History, Stryd Lydan Barn

I was happy to visit St Fagans Museum of History on 3 June 2022 again! Upon seeing Stryd Lydan Barn, a cruck and timber-framed barn, which dates from 1550, I decided to stay there to sketch this historic structure. I really liked the textured surfaces of the old wood. To capture the textures, I spent much time drawing the lines to depict the wood surfaces.

Fourteen Locks Canal

Great to meet up with friends of Urban Sketchers Cardiff this morning at Fourteen Locks Canal in Newport. I walked down the canal and saw this beautiful cottage house and decided to sketch it. We had a gathering afterwards and what great sketches everyone produced!

 

Tintern Abbey

Yesterday I had this pleasure to visit Tintern Abbey and surrounding areas with my friends. Itinerary was tight and I could only made a quick pencil sketch on location. I later colourised the sketch using walnut oil and gel pen and colour pencils.

St Fagans National Museum of History

Spent a nice day at St. Fagans National Museum of History! Lots to see and many buildings worth sketching!

 

Sketching at Bryngarw Country Park

On 24 March, I went hiking in Cowbridge and visited a number of places. Along the way I stopped at Bryngarw Country Park to sketch. Time was tight so I did a quick pencil sketch there and when I was home, I finished the sketch with walnut ink and gouache.

Hiking at Sugar Loaf Mountain 英國南威爾斯登山遊

 

Another great hiking trip!  This time to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain!  Fantastic views!  It’s just too cold to sketch outdoors!  I hope I can go back in summer again. 南威爾斯登山之旅！景色好靚！想畫畫但係實在太凍！夏天再去過。

Sheep at Sugar Loaf Mountain

 

Based on the references I got from the hiking trip at Sugar Loaf Mountain, I’m now working on this piece. Just finished working on the first layer of line work.

The Lion with the Shield, Animal Painting Inspired by Cardiff Castle Animal Wall

I would slow down every time to look at the beautiful sculptures at the Animal Wall outside Cardiff Castle! Inspired by these sculptures, I painted the whole series, all 15 of them. This one is one of the two lions holding a shield.   

The sculptures of the Animal Wall were sculpted by two sculptors. One group was done by Thomas Nicholls in 1891 and the other group was done by Alexander Carrick in 1931. This Lion belongs to the first group of sculptures.

This is an urban sketch of the beautiful Angel Hotel in Cardiff that I did in 2018 summer. I sat on the pavement facing the entrance of the hotel and in the background I included a bit of the tower of Cardiff Castle. It gives a sense of location to the hotel. I really liked the lights and shadows on this bright sunny day!

Castell Coch / Castle Coch is a beautiful architectural gem in Wales!  I visited this fantastic castle earlier and did a black-and-white sketch there. Based on the sketch reference, I painted this piece with watercolour and added in details with ink pens.  I hope you like it!:)

 

Llantwit Major Church Sketch

Another new art print Thanks to my friend’s invitation, I had a great day out to this small charming town of Llantwit Major in South Wales! After exploring the quiet alleys of the town, I visited the charming church of St Illtyd’s which is a church complex in Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan, southeast Wales. According to the information I got and my friend’s explanation, It is located at the site of the oldest college in the United Kingdom believed to have been founded by St Illtud c. AD 508. I settled in the garden of remembrance which gave me the great view of the church tower with rustic walls in front of me.

Caernafon Castle Urban Sketch Art Print

This piece is a live sketch painting, an urban sketch, that I did on location at Caffi Maes right in front of Caernafon Castle back in 2017. It was a bright happy sunny afternoon and I really enjoyed sketching and chatting with visitors and locals at Caffi Maes there.
