Chuen Lung Village Restaurant 川龍端記茶樓

Sketching and having Seven-Up with Mint leaves in the countryside of Chuen Lung Village in Tsuen Wan. I decided to use a blue palette to depict summer rain clouds and the blue sky in between as well as the strong shadows cast on the ground.

Tsuen Wan Yuen Yuen Institute 圓玄學院

Yuen Yuen Institute is a Taoist institute in Tsuen Wan which also pays tribute to Buddhist and Confucianist figures.  Large number of people flocked to the institute to pray for good fortune after Lunar New Year.

圓玄學院供奉儒家、佛教及道教的思想，係荃灣區有名嘅老牌宗教場所。新年過後，大批市民前來拜太歲，熱鬧非常。

"Ship Temple", Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong 香海慈航

The temple was built in 1960 and because the site is next to a stream, the temple was designed to look like a ship.  The temple is a Buddhist temple and it is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, however, most locals just call it the "ship temple".

香海慈航建於1960年，該處前身名為「觀音岩」。據說由老圍村村民仿照南中國海的漁船造型自行設計興建，部份建材更是三疊潭的石塊。

「香海慈航」寺內主要供奉觀世音菩薩。在佛教的經典中，觀世音菩薩為普渡眾生，倒駕慈航。

此外，香海慈航的西面設有一道「雲連橋」跨過三疊潭連接對岸。東面則有一座小小的寺廟「潮音淨院」，正門位置面對山下上葵涌一帶。寺外地上有一葫蘆形水池，旁邊的土地廟上寫著「公公十分公道 婆婆一片婆心」。

Four of the Eight Gods above a Columbarium 八仙共融的啟示

I went to Yuen Yuen Institute last Saturday in the Tsuen Wan area. It is the only temple in Hong Kong dedicated to all three major Chinese religions: Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism.   I sat down under a tree and sketched the columbarium on my right.  The picture above the columbarium was a large sculptural mural depicting the eight gods in Chinese mythology, however I only managed to sketch four of them.   All eight gods were once mortals on earth and came from all walks of life. They represent the rich, the poor, the young and the old, bonding together in harmony, they made many great adventures.  Their fellowship is a big lesson for us to learn in the urban modern world!


「圓玄學院」供奉儒家、佛教及道教的思想，認為三教同源！安坐樹下，速畫了骨灰龕場上八仙中的其中四位。中國神話裡的八仙，分別代表男女老幼、貧賤富貴。他們雖來自不同背景，各有個性和才能，卻不分尊卑，相處融洽，到處遊歷。
