Two Magpies at Chepstow Castle, Art Print

One for sorrow! Two for joy! Three for a girl and four for a boy. Magpies! A common sight here in the UK! I have been thinking drawing/painting magpies for a while and recently I visited the very beautiful Chepstow Castle and I was captivated by the view across the river. So I thought why not put the magpies and the castle together! Here is the result! Two magpies, two for joy, with the famous Chepstow Castle as backdrop!

Art Print, Tiger on the Mountain

Finished!

2022 is the Year of the Tiger. I especially painted this piece before the Chinese New Year arrives. In this piece, I depict a tiger high up on the mountain and regally walks down the cliff of the mountain with ease. The pine tree is a symbol of longevity and for this pine tree which thrives high up on the mountain, I want to convey strength and toughness as well.  Wish you all a great Year of the Tiger!

Sai Kung Cows Watercolour Painting

Cows can easily be spotted in Sai Kung district in Hong Kong. In the past many years I lived in Sai Kung, I met them from time to time, often just in the streets of Sai Kung Town. I like their mild temperament and how they like to walk around in a pack. I used watercolour to paint this piece to depict this iconic creature, a member of wild Hong Kong.

Visit my store to see this painting!

Waterfall Country, Wales

A friend of mine, an experienced hiker, took me to ‘Waterfall Country’ or the Vale of Neath in South Wales. I was thrilled to see the very lush and green temperate forests hidden in the deep valleys cut deep into the rocks by a mighty series of waterfalls! We visited four waterfalls and the third fall, Sgwd y Pannwr, was especially spectacular. We couldn’t stop for sketching as the journey was long so I decided to paint the scene when I was back home and here’s the results. A gouache and acrylic painting of Sgwd y Pannwr. I have taken a series of footage of the trip and do stay tuned for the upcoming YouTube video. Simply visit https://youtube.com/c/英國Gary畫室 to visit my channel. #art #waterfall #waterfallpainting#acrylicpainting #gouache

Hong Kong Bird Series : Japanese White-eye on a Coral Tree

Three Japanese white-eye hopping on a Coral tree! Acrylic on gesso paper. These little birds are common resident birds in Hong Kong. Thanks to veteran wildlife photographer Robert at Wildcreatures Hong Kong for taking me to Tai Po Kau nature Reserve, I took a series of photos of these beautiful birds when they were hopping on the Coral trees which were in full blossom. I had been thinking painting these birds since then and now I finally composed and painted this piece. To simulate the vibrant colours of both the birds and flowers, I repeatedly glazed the painting with layers of transparent colours, a technique which is called Flemish technique and has been used by many old and contemporary masters on their oil paintings.

Hong Kong Pharmacy Cat

Doodle time! Hong Kong Pharmacy Cat. It’s quite a common sight to see a cat or two guarding a traditional Hong Kong pharmacy which sells both oriental and western medicine and daily necessities. Besides inking and colouring the cat, it’s fun to look for references of some of the most popular and yet unusual medicated ointments and oil available in the market.

Black Kite Over Hong Kong

Newly completed ink drawing. ‘Black Kite over Hong Kong’ I’m very happy that it has just found a new home! Black Kites are common birds of prey in Hong Kong and they can be seen flying above and between skyscrapers. I think it would be great to draw a majestic black kite with the iconic view of Victoria Harbour from the Peak to go with it.
