I have always found the birds around me fascinating and painting these birds is an interesting journey. With a little bit of research along the way and the advice from friends who are birds and wildlife photographers, I have learnt a bit more about these lovely native Hong Kong birds. Stay tuned! Sai Kung Fish Hawker 西貢漁販

One of my earlier studio paintings. 早期作品

I painted this based on a photo I took at the waterfront of Sai Kung Town where fish hawkers gather almost every day to sell their seafood.

西貢漁販經常滙聚西貢市海傍，熱鬧非常，故此我在西貢市海傍影相後在畫室完成此油畫。

Sai Kung Tin Man 西貢鐵匠

It's sad to know that Mr Mak (Sai Kung Tin Man) has passed away. I really admired him for his dedication to his craft.

It's a studio painting which I did 7 years ago of him.

日復日，年復年，西貢鐵匠麥生手制各式鐵器多年，係公認嘅西貢之寶。得知他走了，行到他舖前裝香，心裡若有所失。

這是七年前畫嘅油畫，畫佢係欣賞佢日日如是，默默製造各式各樣鐵器。

Painting of Gwan Gung : Work in Progress 正在畫關公

I sketched this Gwan Gung image at the Mong Kok protest site earlier and thought it would be good subject matter for a painting, so I started working on it today.  First the under layer then the blocking of Gwan Gung based on my sketch done on site.

早前係旺角佔領區速寫關公廟傍嘅關公像，一路打算畫張關公油畫，等到今日有時間就開壇作畫！先打底層色，然後對照張速寫確立關公造型，遲啲再上色。

The painting is based on an old photo of Ladder Street.  I really like the clothes that the people were wearing which were either white or black which unified the image so well.  A deliberate blue tone  was added to the painting so as to create a cool jazzy feeling to it.  It's also quite a challenge and a lot of fun to paint so many people in one painting.   While painting each one of them, I was like going back in time, trying to think and feel what each person's life was like.

此畫是根據舊照片畫的。地點是樓梯街。大概是當時其他色彩的布料昂貴吧，畫中人物衣服都是非黑即白。如此黑白配襯，畫面又特別好看。繪畫時我刻意加上藍調，給整張畫一種冷的感覺。還有刻畫每一個人時，好像時光倒流，猜想他們每一個當時究竟過著怎樣的生活。

It's a quite a challenge to paint so many people scattered on the stairs.  Based on an old photo, the scene is probably Ladder Street, Sheung Wan.   Currently, I'm building the under layer of the painting.

Old Ladder Street 樓梯街往昔

Ladder Street (Chinese: 樓梯街) is a street in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, consisting entirely of stone steps.  The painting is based on an old black and white photo.

樓梯街（Ladder Street）位於香港上環，顧名思義，是一條以樓梯為主的街道，除了荷李活道以南，文武廟旁邊一小段可供車輛駛進四方街外，其餘各段皆為石級。早於香港開埠初期的1841年至1850年間興建，歷史悠久，現已被古物古蹟辦事處列為一級歷史建築。

At the Foot of Lion Rock (Defending Hong Kong against National Education) 獅子山下 （反國民教育 保衛香江）

The Joint Declaration signed by Britain and China is ignored by China literally and the "One Country Two Systems" which guarantees Hong Kong's Autonomy is under serious threat! Every day we see the increasing influence from the Communist Party of China, interfering with Hong Kong's affairs. We also see how the Hong Kong Government and the chief executive (governor), which is not elected by Hongkongese, forcefully implements "national education" which focuses on praising the Communist Party in China, against the will of most Hongkongese. More than 90000 Hongkongese took to the street to protest a month ago and just now, a group of secondary school (high school) students are staging a hunger strike outside the Hong Kong Government Offices, to protest against the implementation of national education.

I hope such painting will give empowerment to the people who love Hong Kong!

Centre Street Old Tenement Building 正街唐樓油畫

Oil painting with texture paste, foam boards and acrylic!

Day 1: Building up structure and volume with model paste and foam materials.
Day 2:  The coloring process took a whole day to finish.

Centre Street Tenement Building is an icon at the junction of Centre Street and Des Voeux Road. On the ground level there is also an old-fashioned wine seller, a gem in this part of the city.

Painting in Progress: Sheung Wan Tenement Building 上環唐樓製作中

I spent a whole afternoon working on the modeling paste and foam materials that gave the painting a more three-dimensional feel.  Now I am waiting for the paste to get dry before I can start working with the colors.
