I have arrived in the UK for a month now.  Here comes the first YouTube video about sketching in the UK since I arrived.

 

Ngau Chi Wan Village 牛池灣鄉

I went to sketch at Ngau Chi Wan Village, one of the few remaining villages in the urban areas of Hong Kong and sadly its existence is under increasing pressure for redevelopment. I settled near the red village shrine as you can see it on the right. Huts built with metal sheets adorned with washing lines are right in front of me. I wouldn’t say it’s a beautiful scene but It’s definitely a fun and intriguing scene to sketch. 

Sai Kung Cow No. 2 西貢牛 No.2

Time to paint the cows in my neighbourhood. I just finished painting the second piece of the Sai Kung series. Sai Kung Cow No. 2. It’s the first time I used Daniel Smith watercolour and I like it.

Feral cows are often seen in the district I live in and I enjoy so much drawing and painting them. Recently I did a small watercolour sketch of a cow in my sketchbook and I decided to repaint it on an A3 size watercolour paper and here's the result.

A cool overcast day, a quiet afternoon, perfect for some meditation and urban sketching in front of Sai Kung Tin Hau Temple, a temple for the goddess of the sea.

Sketching at Nam Sang Wai, a wetland in Yuen Long, with art buddies. I like the cluster of vertical tree trunks packed together and the lights and shadows created by the afternoon sun.

 When Hong Kong was once called the pearl of the orient.  Ink drawing on paper.

Hong Kong Bird Series : Japanese White-eye on a Coral Tree 香港鳥類：暗綠繡眼鳥與盛放中的刺桐

Three Japanese white-eye hopping on a Coral tree! Acrylic on gesso paper. These little birds are common resident birds in Hong Kong. Thanks to veteran wildlife photographer Robert at Wildcreatures Hong Kong for taking me to Tai Po Kau nature Reserve, I took a series of photos of these beautiful birds when they were hopping on the Coral trees which were in full blossom. I had been thinking painting these birds since then and now I finally composed and painted this piece. To simulate the vibrant colours of both the birds and flowers, I repeatedly glazed the painting with layers of transparent colours, a technique which is called Flemish technique and has been used by many old and contemporary masters on their oil paintings.

Doodle time! Hong Kong Pharmacy Cat. It’s quite a common sight to see a cat or two guarding a traditional Hong Kong pharmacy which sells both oriental and western medicine and daily necessities. Besides inking and colouring the cat, it’s fun to look for references of some of the most popular and yet unusual medicated ointments and oil available in the market. 

 

Black Kite Over Hong Kong 香港麻鷹

 

Newly completed ink drawing. ‘Black Kite over Hong Kong’ I’m very happy that it has just found a new home! Black Kites are common birds of prey in Hong Kong and they can be seen flying above and between skyscrapers. I think it would be great to draw a majestic black kite with the iconic view of Victoria Harbour from the Peak to go with it. #inkartist #lineart #birdart #wildlifeart #blackkite #hongkongbirds #香港雀鳥 #麻鷹

Black Kite Close-up 41cm x 29cm

Acrylic ink on paper.  A great thank you to Robert @ https://www.wildcreatureshongkong.org for providing me with his wonderful photo reference to this handsome Black Kite. Instead of rendering it in the usual way, I added patterns to the feather formation to make it more stylised.

Oriental Magpie Robin 41cm x 29cm

Acrylic ink on paper.  It's based on a photo I took near Sai Kung Lions Nature Education Centre.  An Oriental Magpie Robin happened to be singing high above me.  To render it, I added the stylised clouds and sky rendering in the classical Franklin Booth style.

Acrylic ink on paper.  An unexpected encounter of this hawk feasting on a robin near my home in Sai Kung.  I quickly went home to grab my tele lens and I was lucky to have taken many photos of this bird feasting.  Thus this piece of artwork. Thank you!  Japanese Sparrowhawk!

Black Kite above Central 38cm x 26cm (SOLD) 

Acrylic ink on paper.  The background is based in an on-location sketch I did a few years ago at the roof top of a building in Central.  Black Kites like to circle high above and between high rises in Hong Kong so I created this ink painting.

Acrylic ink on paper.  Osprey!  A handsome predator not as easily to be spotted as the Black Kite!

Watercolour and Mixed Media on paper  It's based on a low-res vintage photo I found on the net.  I really wanted to visualise how the scene was like so I added a lot of details in the illustration style and used watercolour to create a relaxing mood to this piece. 

Sai Kung Cows

Watercolour and Mixed Media on paper  Feral cows are members of the Sai Kung community. They can be spotted walking, eating and resting in town quite easily on weekdays.  This piece depicts a scene which is a combination of certain references of the lovely and gentle Sai Kung cows.

Sketching in the Water in Sai Kung 西貢溪中速寫

Sitting and sketching in the middle of this stream. The water and the shades helped me cool down while sketching on this otherwise very hot day. 

Old Hong Kong : Cheungsam, Old Harbour Boat and Old Street 懷舊香港 ：長衫、舊維港與舊街

 

Tried out different ideas, did a few sketches of elements of old Hong Kong and came up with this drawing.
