Sai Kung Lunar New Year Flower Market 2015

Thanks to the owners of one of the flower stalls there, I was able to get close to their flowers in the rather busy flower market and did a few detailed sketches of some of the new year flowers.

Sketching at Hau Wong Temple

Hau Wong Temple

I went to a religious gathering at the Hau Wong Temple near Lok Fu this afternoon. In the gathering, Hongkongers came forward to offer joss sticks and prayers in front of Hau Wong, the general who protected the last emperor "Emperor Bing of Song" of the Southern Song Dynasty who fled to Hong Kong. The Southern Song Dynasty ended in 1279 as the Mongols conquered all of China.

The gathering was organised by Hong Kong Resurgence Order

Origin of the Temple (Info from Chinese Temples Committee)

There are different versions of the temple's history. Some believe that it was built to commemorate Yeung Leung Jit, a loyal follower and a marquis of the last Emperors of the Southern Sung Dynasty who fled with the royal family to Kowloon driven by the Mongols. A stone tablet at the courtyard, written by Chan Pak To, a Chinese scholar and officer in the late Qing Dynasty provided an account of the story. Others believe that the temple was built in memory of a villager surnamed Yeung who had cured the Emperor of the Southern Sung of an illness when the emperor family fled to Kowloon City.

The Peninsula

The Peninsula, Hong Kong

With the presence of the bamboo art installation, the whole composition became much more interesting.

From Wikipedia:
The Peninsula Hong Kong (Chinese香港半島酒店), located in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong, is the flagship property of the The Peninsula Hotels group. Opened in 1928, and expanded in 1994, the hotel combines colonial and modern elements, and is notable for its large fleet of Rolls-Royces painted the distinctive "Peninsula green".

Warm Winter Day at Choi Hung Estate

Warm Winter Day at Choi Hung Estate

One of the oldest public estates built by the British-Hong Kong Government, Choi Hung Estate was designed by Palmer & Turner Group and was built between 1962 and 1964. The estate was well-designed and forms a quiet space in itself in the otherwise noisy urban landscape.

Beddings hung under the warm winter sun in the estate's playground,  a familiar sight back in the seventies and eighties.

5-Day Sketch Challenge Day 5 : San Po Kong

5-Day Sketch Challenge Day 5: Iconic Plastic Wares Factory Building

The last day of my five-day sketch challenge!   I wandered around San Po Kong and sketched the following. The first sketch was the iconic plastic wares company factory building which has been around since the 70s, the second one is a lonely stone fence of a playground facing a wall of a tenement building, and the third one a Chiu Chou food stall.

It's an interesting experience really as the limited time available each day forced me to pick up scenes that I otherwise would not sketch. Good lesson for me!

Lion Rock on the First Day of 2015 獅子山2015的第一日

Lion Rock on First day of 2015

The first day of 2015, I decided to sketch something symbolic!  I spotted this view of Lion Rock between buildings and trees and settled there and started sketching.  Besides sketching the scene, I also added the huge yellow banner calling for universal suffrage for Hong Kong, which was hung there a few days ago.  Hong Kong, it's time to stand up and make yourself a nation state!

Ruins and Trees: Devil's Peak Battery

Ruins and Trees

The Devil's Peak Battery was built in 1902 by the Hong Kong British Government to guard the eastern entrance to Victoria Harbour.   Today, the battery has fallen into disrepair and parts of the structure were modified.  In the sketch, trees are growing within the structure with branches reaching up to the top of the fortified walls, creating a rather eerie mood.
