I spent an hour hiking around the neighbourhood after lunch today and finally arrived at the Kwun Mun Fisherman Village which is located in the mid-levels of Sai Kung Town. The plans of the houses here are pretty interesting as many of them resemble the shape of a cross. The collective tilted roofs make the whole village a landmark in the region.

Reconstructing the Front View of An Old Pawn Shop 重畫晉源押

"Chun Yuen" Pawn Shop was the oldest pawn shop in Hong Kong. It was built more than two hundred years old using traditional green bricks and large cut-out slabs of rocks. The shop was huge when compared with many pawn shops in Hong Kong, signifying that Yuen Long Old Town was once an important economy in this area of Hong Kong. It ceased to operate after the second world war and the shop has since remained closed.

Since the front door is facing a narrow alley, drawing the front view of the entire building is not easy. The front view drawing is based on photos I took there.

晉源押是香港現存最古老的當鋪，至今已有二百多年歷史。晉源押的規模頗大，但二次大戰完結後結束營業，現時重門深鎖。晉源押以青磚建造，用麻石作基層。現已被古物古蹟辦事處列為一級歷史建築。

晉源押面向小巷，店面正面都是根據實地拍的照片重構畫出來的。

34th World Wide Sketchcrawl: Burning Offerings to Gods 二帝廟前祈福

It was a nice experience to sketchcrawl around Yuen Long Old Town, a place that we could still see a number of traditional brick-bulit houses and temples. In the sketch, a man was preparing offerings to be burned at the burner. Written on the burner was three traditional Chinese characters, representing the three gods, god of good fortune, god of prosperity and god of longevity.

元朗舊墟內保留了一定數量青磚建的老屋和廟宇。此二帝廟前的大火爐上寫上福祿壽三字, 好讓村民前來祈福。

I went to this protest against Dolce & Gabanna Hong Kong on 8 January. This sketch is based on the photos I took on site. Thousands of furious Hongkongnese participated. Below is a note written by a local critic in order to explain what is actually happening in Hong Kong.

Outrageous racism of D&G shop and the Tsimshatsui mall in Kong Kong, reported by the popular and daring Apple Daily of Hong Kong. The D&G (Dolce & Gabbana) shop in Hong Kong didn't allow Hongkongers to take photos in the public area in the street outside the shop. Camera was covered by the security guard. The guard in the mall told the reporter that local Hong Kong residents are not welcome to visit as they only expect luxury goods buyers from the communist governed mainland China to come. Tourists from communist China are obviously allowed to take photos in the public street area outside the shop. Lawyers told the press that this is infringement of public access and human rights. The reporter came to test the shop and the mall in Tsimshatsui, as a follow-up action of readers' complaints.

If you are not luxury goods buyers from Communist China, or if you are not prepared to buy as rampantly as the communist buyers do, please think twice before you come to visit Hong Kong, which is now a place contaminated with communist racism, greed and bad manners of luxury outlets. We Hongkongers regret to tell you this, but as our SAR Hong Kong government is dwarfed by the communist Chinese government in Peking (Beijing), who claim to be the most powerful nation next to the USA, we can only treat you well when Hong Kong regains its autonomy. Huge Banyan Tree Swallowing an Abandoned School 錦田樹屋

Kam Tin Tree House is a huge Banyan tree (Ficus microcarpa) that has been growing for more than a hundred years at the site of an abandoned village school in the Yuen Long District. The arial roots of the tree grew along the beams, pillars and walls of the abandoned school. Through time the whole school is "swallowed" completely by the tree as the arial roots slowly thickened into hundreds of supporting trunks. The entwining trunks are really a sight to behold! Truly a living sculpture!

據說錦田樹屋原是書齋, 書齋荒廢後，旁邊的榕樹慢慢長大，氣根沿書齋的牆壁和橫樑擴張，終於變成今天的樣子。

Abandoned Terrace in the Urban Jungle 船街秘密花園

I went sketching with friends along Ship Street. The street is a long ascending flight of steps. At the end of the street, a photographer happened to pass by and showed us a concealed narrow stairway that leads up to an abandoned terrace which once housed a small school building decades ago. Following him, we climbed the stairs and found that the abandoned terrace is now overgrown with huge banyan trees with their tangling roots wrapping many parts of the terrace's balustrade. Huge tree roots are crawling on the terrace floor! The view was stunning as the skyscrapers down hill were right behind the towering trees.

昨日同畫友們到灣仔船街寫生。走到船街樓梯盡頭，路經的一名龍友帶我們走入一個隱閉於榕樹林的荒廢平台。據龍友說平台原為一所學校，但校舍已拆多年。現在大榕樹群從新塑造此地，另此地成為城市中的秘密花園。

Quiet Village Houses at Luk Keng 依山傍水楊屋村

I was invited to a Christmas barbecue party at this remote village in the very northern part of Hong Kong. The name of the village "Yeung Uk" literally means the Yeung's Houses". The village is small but charming. A small hill full of mature trees is right behind the houses while a small tidal pond filled with red marshes is sitting right in front of the village.

A few days ago, I went to a cooked food centre located in a multi-storey government building in the Sham Shui Po district. The district is one of the older and poorer districts in Hong Kong and the cheaper food here is very popular among the communities. The centre is a huge square dinning hall with many food stores lining the three sides of the hall. We ordered our food and started sketching.

Hong Kong has always been a maritime city and temples built for the goddess of the sea are scattered around the city. However, many of these temples originally built at the waterfront are now far away from the shorelines due to reclamation works that have been carried for a century. This temple is a rare one as it still stands at the waterfront, guarding the passing ships at the eastern entrance to the Victoria Harbour.

I spent a great afternoon today with a few sketcher friends sketching along Saam Ga Village in Lei Yue Mun. Lei Yue Mun is the east entrance to Victoria Harbour and it is a great place to watch the boats and the waves. This sketch was done on a rocky beach in the shade of a big tree.

Made a little sketch after lunch at a cafe opposite Colour Brown Cafe along See Cheung Street, Sai Kung. Colour Brown is one of the few cafes that brighten up this old street in Sai Kung Old Town. The little chinese wooden doors and the simple green umbrella together give much character to this little cafe.

西貢市場街近年開了多間小咖啡室。其中Colour Brown應該是最悠久的一間。中式小木門加上店前一把太陽傘，既簡單又具性格!

Fishing On Top of a Big Rock 石上釣魚

Lei Yue Mun is the eastern entrance to Victoria Harbour. It is a popular spot for those who enjoy fishing. It was a very sunny day. Thanks to the shade provided by the large rock next to me, I could sketched comfortably, hiding from the scorching summer sun.
今天難得假期，跑到鯉魚門三家村四處拍照同畫畫。見多人在海邊的一堆大石上釣魚，便找附近一陰涼處，坐下便畫。

Went to a friend's house on Ping Chau, a small quiet island located west of the Hong Kong Island. While sketching, I could feel the heat coming in, with the shade I was in gradually replaced by the low but very hot afternoon sun.

早前到友人於坪州的家畫畫。可是天氣實在太熱，非快快畫完不可！

A stray calf has been resting near my home for a few days. A security guard stationing nearby gave the calf buckets of water to drink each day. The initially shy calf is now not very much afraid of the residents and would lick your hands if you are nice to him.

我家附近跑來了一頭迷途小牛。好心的護衛每天都準備一桶又一桶水比小牛喝！原本怕人的小牛變得友善，還會舔你的手!

I went to Yuen Yuen Institute last Saturday in the Tsuen Wan area. It is the only temple in Hong Kong dedicated to all three major Chinese religions: Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. I sat down under a tree and sketched the columbarium on my right. The picture above the columbarium was a large sculptural mural depicting the eight gods in Chinese mythology, however I only managed to sketch four of them. All eight gods were once mortals on earth and came from all walks of life. They represent the rich, the poor, the young and the old, bonding together in harmony, they made many great adventures. Their fellowship is a big lesson for us to learn in the urban modern world!

「圓玄學院」供奉儒家、佛教及道教的思想，認為三教同源！安坐樹下，速畫了骨灰龕場上八仙中的其中四位。中國神話裡的八仙，分別代表男女老幼、貧賤富貴。他們雖來自不同背景，各有個性和才能，卻不分尊卑，相處融洽，到處遊歷。

It is a studio drawing of a scene in Tai Wai based on some photos I took earlier, a comparatively old district in the Sha Tin area, where buildings are mostly low-rises and have been there for decades. While many old parts of Hong Kong are being torn down and turned into super high-rises accompanied by super malls, these old charming streets with real local shops and restaurants are becoming increasingly rare.

Under the Highway 東區走廊與獅子山

I first walked along King's Road, then turned into the side streets and finally came to the Island East Corridor Expressway, a highway built over the water of Victoria Harbour, along the east shore of Hong Kong Island. Under the influence of tropical storm Haima, it was a very windy and overcast day. Still, there were people hanging out here under the highway, some fishing, some just chilling out in the fresh wind. Across the harbour in the middle is Lion Rock, a beloved hill that represents the virtues of Hong Kong, resilience, optimism and the love of the rule of law.

起初沿著英皇道走，後走進橫街，見到東區走廊就停下來。一號戒備訊號仍然生效，「海馬」下的維港風力強勁，烏雲密佈，但毫不阻人們到此釣魚和乘涼。維港對岸的獅子山，象徵能耐、樂觀同法治，正默默守望每一個香港人。

Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower Now and Then 尖沙咀鐘樓古與今

Time to compare two pieces of work here. First, a quick sketch I did today at a friend's office on the 15th floor of Star House, Tsim Sha Tsui. The clock tower together with its railway terminus was completed in 1916. Sadly, the whole terminus was demolished in 1977 and only the clock tower was preserved. Below is a watercolour painting I did based on a black and white photo taken around the sixties, should also be taken on one of the top floors of Star House as Star House was built in 1963, 14 years before the railway station was demolished. The station was of Edwardian Baroque style and was designed by British architect Brigadier General Arthur Benison Hubback (1871-1948), who also designed a number of public buildings in Malaysia.

第一張作品是今日在星光行十五樓朋友寫子樓內畫的。鐘樓連同尖沙嘴火車站大樓建於1916年。可惜到了1977年火車站就拆了，只有鐘樓保留下來。下面的水彩作品就根據一張攝於六十年代的黑白照畫的。星光行建於1963年, 可以肯定照片都是從星光行高處拍攝的。整個尖沙嘴火車站是愛得華建築風格而建築師是英人Brigadier General Arthur Benison Hubback (1871-1948)。他的作品還有多座馬來西亞公共建築物。

Sketching Tai Tan Village Under a Papaya Tree 木瓜樹下畫大灘

This afternoon, I went to a village near the Wong Shek Pier. Settled down in the shade of a papaya tree, I spent an hour or so sketching this nice village house. What is most special about the house is the four digits at the top of the house, indicating the house has been a member of the village for over forty years.

下午走到鄰近黃石碼頭的大灘村作畫。木瓜樹蔭下，畫了一間老村屋。老村屋最有價值係牆頂上的四個數字，說明此屋已陪伴大灘超過四十年。

When I started laying the watercolour after the line work, two security guards approached me and said I had to stop. Dumbfounded, I asked them why. One of the guards explained it was a place for appreciating the beauty of the garden so painting is not allowed. Wasn't I appreciating the beauty of the garden I thought?! I left for the garden office and discussed with the office staff there and they explained again, painting is not allowed as they think if everyone does the same, the place would become dirty. They went on to explain how expensive the paving, stones and rock tables were and so protecting them from damage was necessary.

準備多加一點水彩，突然出現兩位護衛，叫我不要再畫！其中一位說此地係讓人欣賞園景，不是作畫的! 真是莫名其妙！再到庭園辦事處詢問時，那裡的職員解釋說南蓮園池的地磚、石塊同檯椅等等均價值不菲，必須保護云云。

Tramway and Wet Market at Chun Yeung Street 電車穿過春秧街街市

It was my first time visiting the Chun Yeung Street Wet Market in North Point. It is full of energy and local ambience. What makes Chun Yeung Street unique is the tramway that passes through the very middle of this busy street, interacting with the pedestrians.

Sai Kung Cantonese Opera 西貢做大戲

Characters in a Cantonese Opera playing at Sai Kung Street Theatre fronting the Sai Kung Tin Hau Temple. What the lady carrying should be the head of a fallen hero. it's certainly a revenge and she is in her passage in presenting this trophy to someone greater than her, not an unusual scenario in ancient literature I suppose.

一年一度西貢天后廟前做大戲。武旦所拿的喺某人的頭顱，我諗都係復仇的證據! 可說是不小古典文學裡的橋段。

The street market beside the street theatre, with local traditional food and products on sale. All real stalls run by locals. Hong Kong should have more of such street market, in every district, all year round.

大戲市集有各種地道小食，買街坊即做的棉花糖同龍鬚糖重有燒魷魚實在比係冷氣商場連鎖店買開心好多！一來平，二來係即做，成件事又有街頭味道！其實由大眾市民經營嘅市集應該一年到晚區區都有。

Climber Plant at University of Hong Kong 香港大學黃金葛

A huge climber, Scindapsus aureum, is firmly attached on this palm tree in the courtyard of the university Main Building. I thought it was two separate climbers at first as there were two distinct leaf shapes but after consulting a tree expert friend, he says it's actually the same plant as this species has the ability to change its leaf shape.

畫時以為喺兩種攀緣植物，後來問一位熟識植物的朋友才知都喺同一棵植物。據那位朋友所講，黃金葛攀上高處後喺可以「變葉」的。

Old Sai Kung 老西貢

An old sketch that I forgot! Done in 2007, it was sketched at the top of a small hill called Sai Kung Park now. The houses and huts below are all part of the Sai Kung Old Town, built around the hill I was sketching from. The old town is full of narrow alleys and the whole town was once surrounded by sea on three sides before reclamation that changed the landscape totally in the 70s.

Sketching in the Dark at the Waterfront Promenade 速畫夜西貢

Tired from work, strolled down the waterfront promenade in Sai Kung Town with a sketchbook and started sketching in the dark. It's been long time since I last did a live sketch and it was relaxing. The night breeze, the people resting, chatting under the Banyan trees and the bright lights from the seafood restaurants, all so soothing! The only problem was the visits of mosquitoes which made me work faster:)
做累了，拾起久遺的畫冊走到西貢海傍就畫起來。晚風、閒人、榕樹、多寫意！可惜飛來一隻蚊，非速畫不可。

The harbour was quiet and the water was so dark in the night. When sketching the boat on the right, a small speed boat came in, creating ripples in the water.

Another new mural at Central Market. Six of us together, Sindy, Steve, Joe, Jamaika, Rita and me, we are going to create a false corridor on the end wall of the long corridor on the second floor. My part of the mural, patterns and plants are inspired by Patrick Blanc's vertical garden. Also showing on the far right is Sindy's under layer of her part, an aquarium.

Studying Trees at Kowloon Park 九龍公園樹木遊

A trip to Kowloon Park, studying the trees and shrubs by names and how they are laid out. My two favourites are the very mature Camphor trees (樟樹) lining the park embankment along Haiphong Road and the Ficus with the sculptural aerial roots wrapping around their trunks. The line of trees above, large and small, creates a nice-looking buffer zone at the park boundary and frames the buildings nicely beyond.

九龍公園眾樹中，最喜歡的是樟樹同榕樹。面向海防道的一排樟樹，為行人同商戶提供樹蔭。試想夏天沒有了樟樹嘅樹蔭會點！而九龍公園內的榕樹，有不小是老樹，根系大，氣根密，當中有不小的氣根已落地發展成根座。

The Ficus virens (黃葛樹) is impressive as its roots are spreading downslope, covering the whole area, as large as its own tree crown.

這棵黃葛樹的根系覆蓋了整個小斜坡，面積有它樹冠的大小。

Blue House Now and Then 藍屋古與今

The illustration is done based on a photograph I took of a rusty photo metal plate displayed on site at Stone Nullah Street, Wan Chai. The rusty photo shows what the street was like at least fifty years ago. The passing bikes, the people and the children walking in the street really brightened up the whole scene.

這張畫喺根據石水渠街頭的一幅老照來畫的。我諗張老照都應該喺四五十年前拍的。當時的石水渠街睇起來比現在熱鬧得多。

Decades passed and this is what is like at Stone Nullah Street, Wan Chai today. Only the "Blue House" remains and Stone Nullah Street is a much quiter street today.

時移世易，現在只有藍屋仍然存在！石水渠街亦比舊時靜得多。

The "Blue House" is currently declared a grade I historic building in Hong Kong which means it is of great importance and every effort should be made to preserve it. However, only buildings or sites declared "monument" will be given legal protection which prevents them from demolition or alteration.

Catering Men in Central Back in the Fifties 五十年代中環包伙食

Based on two old Hong Kong photo postcards that amazed me, I did the following two drawings. Catering services in the fifties! The sight is simply amazing, people carrying large wooden boxes full of meals on plates, passing through busy streets in Central during lunch hours.

早前買咗一套香港老照片明信片，參照其中兩張照片畫咗兩張sketch, 係五六十年代中環午飯時送包伙食嘅景像，頭頂托飯盤真係歎為觀止！

It's like they didn't take much effort to carry them, though I'm sure it wasn't true, especially during the hot damp summer months of Hong Kong.

These catering people serving the many office workers and professionals have long gone, only the trams are still running, passing through Central.

A group of Hong Kong artists got together at Sik On Street, Wan Chai this afternoon and worked on a mural, painting their feelings, thoughts and prayers on the wall. We did this as a response to those who suffer in the great disaster in Japan and also for those who are in need from around the world. It was really special to see everyone put their responses in circles, not in words but in art.

A Very Quick Sketch at Gage Street Wet Market and Gage Street Redevelopment 速畫結志街與結志街重建

After working on two sketches and feeling a bit tired, I decided to make the third sketch a very quick one and so this one was done within 10 minutes at Gage Street, Central. The wet market here which covers Gage Street, Peel Street and Graham Street is pretty interesting. A living functional street market sandwiched between old tenement buildings, it serves the residents of the Mid-Levels and at the same time attracts quite a number of tourists, coming here to feel the authentic street culture of Hong Kong. However, the tenement buildings in this area are soon going to be torn down for redevelopment by the Urban Renewal Authority. If I were the authority, I would choose not to pull down everything, as the tenement buildings together with the street market have already become an asset to Hong Kong. If you have noticed how many foreign visitors like to come to Gage Street to take photos and feel the local ambience! Instead, I would help the residents to maintain the buildings. In case if the structure is already too dated to be kept in good condition, the authority could work with the residents to formulate redevelopment plan, enabling them to return to the same district after redevelopment, therefore allowing the very group of people who forms this "asset" to reconstruct the local ambience.

畫完兩張sketch時已很累！第三張於是畫得好快，不用十分鐘就畫完。結志街街市係中環區難得街上濕貨市場，整個街市同結志街唐樓融為一體，甚具特色。靜坐作畫時，不難見到外國遊人到來拍照，親身感受此處地道風味，可說結志街的現狀絕對係香港嘅asset!

市建局快將重建此區，究竟此區地道人文風境可會保留，原區居民可會安排遷回發展後的新樓呢? 如果我係市建局，我就唔會拆咗呢個寶！反幫原區業主修復物業，保住呢個城市生態。又或因樓太舊，要拆，就同業主一同研究怎樣聯手重建，等原區的人與事可以原區重生！

Central Market Mural, Giraffe, Jaguar and Earthquake in Japan 中環街市的大貓, 長頸鹿與日本地震

It was only last week, when I was painting the giraffe, a Japanese student, who was studying Chinese in Beijing and was on vacation in HK, passed by and we talked about art and his study and exchanged contact emails. He flew back to Japan the other day and then came the powerful earthquake. Relieved to learn that he was safe but he wrote he and his family was in deep shock and greatly saddened by this disaster.

It is indeed a big tragedy. Let's pray for those in grief and pain will get speedy help.

Sketching Along the Central Escalators 遊繪中環

Through the Balustrade

We walked along the Central Escalators and decided to sit down where the balustrade was right in front of us. I sketched the Central Police Station Compound together with the balustrade and the interesting sign hanging, stating there is a CCTV around recording everything. So we are recorded sketching!

Making Picture Frames at Peel Street

This is a picture framing stall at the junction of Hollywood Road and Peel Street. Hollywood Road is famous for its many art galleries. A large portrait of Marilyn Monroe is on display across the road at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery and interestingly, by the time I finished sketching the stall in the forefront, looked back at the gallery, Marilyn Monroe was gone already. My sketcher friend asked did I made it up since she didn't notice there was a portrait.

Progress so far. More tonal changes painted on he body of the giraffe. reflected lights are also added to the eyes to make them look more real and transparent.

Outlines of other animals are added as well, including a cheetah, and three birds. Will go back on Saturday evening and keep on painting, hope to make more progress!

Central Market Mural Project Day Two and Day Three 中環街市牆畫第二及第三天

The sunset and the clouds were done on day two. Then came the under layer of the giraffe and trees, after laying the layer, I started working on the cold reflected lights and some skin patterns, as well as fine-tuning along the way.

Noticed that the left eye was "swollen", like an ulcer, I had to rework to balance both eyes.

Conceptual Drawings for Hong Kong Western District Harbourfront Planning Competition 西區海濱長廊規劃比賽概念圖

Two friends of mine and me, we formed a team and took part in the Hong Kong Western District Harbourfront Planning Competition. Luckily we were selected as one of the finalists and were awarded an outstanding design award. Here is three from a series of conceptual perspective drawings I did for the competition. The first perspective drawing, barges are converted into cafes and floating observation decks, second one, the main elements of the cargo pier are preserved and turned into recreational uses, the third perspective drawing depicts a street in the evening, made up of stacked-up and refurbished containers, housing various shops.

Here are a few photos taken during our first site visit. It's currently a working cargo pier and interestingly, locals are already using this vast open space as their "front" garden in the otherwise very crowded Sheung Wan area.

A huge crowd of people gathered at the top of the Ocean Terminal at Tsim Sha Tsui during the annual Chinese New Year firework display. This year's display lasted for a good 25 minutes! Spectacular indeed!

After the display, people started leaving, Victoria Harbour suddenly became surreal as thick smoke refused to disperse and was hanging in mid-air, partly blocking the skyscrapers. The harbour was unusually quiet and smooth as boats were not yet allowed to re-enter the harbour.

Today was our very 1st successful urbansketchers' sketchwalk here in HK and we were also glad to be sketching with everyone around the world on this World sketch day. We had 7 very excited sketchers gathering at the HK university east gate. We ploughed through a very old estate, looking at some very early walkup apartments and back alley. I was told the streets (Water street, eastern street, western street...) here are also one of the earliest roads to be named. Weather was cloudy and rather chilly but we had a good time sketching and getting to know each other.

This one is an old sketch. It was sketched at the Sai Kung Town Centre where the Tin Hau Temple (Sea Goddess Temple) is. At the time I did this sketch, a group of skilled bamboo scaffolding workers were busy constructing a huge street theatre using mainly bamboos as structural support. Every year, such theatre will be erected for a week and cantonese opera will play for several days, entertaining both the local public, the goddess of the sea and the spirits as well.

On the ground floor on the left: a shop space is converted into an extra dining room of a nearby seafood restaurant.

The second shop from the left: "The Reading Room", a newly-open local bookshop, selling old and new books as well as hosting reading activities.

I was sitting on a pier extended into the harbour. You can see boats casually docking next to the pier.

Old Temple Square @ Yau Ma Tei 油麻地天后廟

This Tin Hau (Goddess of the Sea) Temple, similar to many others in Hong Kong, was once fronting the sea, however as Hong Kong developed, it's now surrounded by buildings. The temple square is shaded by large Banyan trees with their aerial roots hanging down everywhere. These trees provide a nice shaded place for local worshippers and oversea tourists to gather here every day.

The sketch was done a few years ago. This nice little wooden fish market was demolished finally and is now replaced by a new concrete one. The fish market is normally empty during daytime as the fishermen only come here to sell their catch before day break.

A sketch done on a terraced public park, with the very dense Richland Garden residential high-rises across Kwun Tong Road. Hong Kong

Chinese Tempe in front of public housing high rises 三山國王廟坪石邨

The "Saam Saan King Temple" , 三山國王廟 is dedicated to three "kings" or "legendary figures" who are worshipped in Southern China for centuries. This very temple was bulilt in 1800 an was facing the sea. However, with the now closed old Kai Tak airport which was developed during World War II, the temple has become an inland temple for decades. Behind the temple is three housing blocks of Ping Shek Estate, a public housing project which has been around for four decades.

While waiting for a tram, a very quick sketch depicting the concert hall at Van Baealestraat just across the road.

At the top of the Glass Elephant Tower

The sketch was done at the top of the Glass Elephant at Maximilian Park, Hamm. The elephant was originally a coal mine structure but was turned into a giant elephant with a green house by architect Horst Rellecke. At the top inside the green house, I had excellent view of the autumn colours of the city of Hamm.

Went to Netherlands, Belgium and Germany for 11 days for a study trip, focusing on landscape elements , along the way, I did a number of quick sketches.

KNSM Island waterfront, Amsterdam

Not completely sure I'm right with the location. I cycled to this place and settled on the wood deck to sketch. The whole waterfront is lined with nice boats and residential blocks.

Apeldoorn, Netherlands

After visiting the Het Loo Palace at Apeldoorn, we walked along one of the streets and had a quick lunch at a local eatery, along the way I did this sketch.

Breidelstraat overlooking Belfort, Bruges, Belgium

This is the street that connects the smaller square with the larger square "Markt". The tower is the Belfort which was built in the 18th century.

Beguinage of Bruges, Belgium

The Beguinage of Bruges was founded in 1245. The central courtyard, at the time of our visit was filled with autumn colours as all the trees have already turned yellowish brown and red. Interestingly, their branches all tilted to one side in the wind. The sounds the leaves made were soothing.

The majestic Chinese Banyan Trees framing this section of Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui! The sculptural forms of their trunks and branches and their plentiful aerial roots are always great to look at! I was at the time sitting on the second floor of a McDonalds Restaurant, having a Cheeseburger and was immediately captivated by the canopies of these trees!

One the left is part of the Old Central Police Station Compound. The Mid-Levels are full of such very steep roads. Because of the steep gradient, the sidewalk on the right is made up of several flights of small steps.

The only Sri Lankan restaurant in Hong Kong, which is located in a quiet alley in Sai Kung Old Town. The sketch was done in the evening and it was difficult as I had to fend off the mosquitoes while sketching. They were so hungry that even my bug repellent didn't work!

"Lo Baan" is worshipped as a protector god of all construction workers and architects in the Chinese world. What I like most of this temple is the interesting roof design.

Masonry Wall Trees at Forbes Street, Kennedy Town, Hong Kong

Wall trees are considered a unique cultural heritage in Hong Kong. They sprouted naturally on masonry walls built before the Second World War. Many of them are now mature trees that have roots wrapping up old masonry walls in many parts of Hong Kong Island. The Forbes Street wall trees is the largest and most majestic group in Hong Kong!

The historical building is now the legislative council of Hong Kong, Formerly, the Supreme Court. It was built about one hundred years ago. The three buildings behind are the Bank of China Tower on the left, the Cheung Kong Centre in the middle and the old Bank of China Tower on the right.

See Cheung Street, a main street at Sai Kung Old Town, is bustling with visitors on Saturdays. Such low density, spontaneous cityscape is getting rare in Hong Kong as many streets with old low rises are gradually pulled down for high density development.

Dundas Street, Mong Kok at night!

I sat inside the Dundas Street Sitting-Out Area and spent 20 minutes to finish this sketch. The time was 9:20p.m. and Mong Kok was vibrant and crowded with people as usual. However, the sitting-out area / pocket park that I was in was very much underused. I think the gates dividing the street and the park should be removed, otherwise very few will come in.
